The Ulaanbaatar administration is considering dividing two overpopulated districts located at the edge of the city and improving local services. According to officials, the population of the easternmost Bayanzurkh district and Songinokhairhan district at the other end of the capital, has reached in 350,000 each. This represents a large section of the population of Ulaanbaatar; the explanation is the surge in local migration over the past years.
A working group was established in July, 2017 for examining the division of two districts. The issue will be discussed by parliament this month.
