A team of doctors from the First Central Hospital of Ulaanbaatar performed liver transplant surgery on 19 April. This was the 47th liver transplant operation to be conducted since 2011.
The liver transplant surgery between cousins was successfully performed during an operation lasting well over 15 hours by the team of doctors. Top surgeon O.Sergelen, who led the team in yesterday’s operation, was the first to introduce laparoscopy and liver transplant surgery in Mongolia; he was awarded an Honourary Fellowship at the American College of Surgeons (ACS) in 2017.
Six times higher than the global average, liver cancer is now the most serious health problem in Mongolia. Currently, in the country, this kind of surgery costs MNT10-15 million, with 75 percent being funded from the state budget . A total of MNT 79 million 697 thousand in donations has been received by the ‘Eleg negt Mongolchuud’ foundation, which was established in 2016 with the aim of purchasing high-quality equipment for liver transplants.
