Officers from the Mongolian National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) led by J.Chultemsuren have been participating in a mountain rescue programme with their counterparts in Kyrgyzstan under a joint memorandum between the two countries.

In Kyrgyzstan, the Mongolian NEMA 105th rescue unit led by S.Altangerel and Kh.Khashbold, also visited a training centre for divers  in the town of Cholpon-Ata. The Mongolian divers underwent training in Lake Issyk-Kul at a depth of15 meters.

Situated on the northern bank of Issyk-Kul and amidst the towering Tian Shan range, the resort town of Cholpon-Ata is an ideal location for training NEMA’s officers in mountain and water rescue.

In 2017, NEMA conducted a search-and-rescue mission with mountaineers around Otgontenger Mountain (4,008m) in Zavkhan Province when 17 mountaineers died in an avalanche. A group of 27 mountaineers led by Master of Mountaineering Sport N.Surenjav successfully climbed the mountain, but the group was hit by an unexpected avalanche as they made their descent. Only ten members of the group survived Mongolia’s worst mountaineering tragedy.

Rescuing people from water is also relevant – recently another person drowned in the Lake Khuvsgul when he drove his vehicle onto thin ice.
