In his speech at the official opening of the Spring session of Parliament on 5 April, President Kh.Battulga openly criticised several issues such as pension reform, child benefit and replacing the director of the Independent Independent Authority Against Corruption of Mongolia (IAAC).
The President criticized the anti-corruption agency for its investigation of offshore account holders. He noted that Mongolia’s corruption perception ranking has sunk to a score of 35 (see below). Mr Battulga said, he intends to send a proposal to parliament to remove the director of the IAAC. Furthermore, he demanded an answer from the Ministry of Justice and Internal Affairs responding to his official note about restoring capital punishment.
According to the President, the rating of all political parties does not reach 30 percent. He told MPs that they do not even need to sit in parliament if they won’t do anything.
In 2017, Transparency International gave Mongolia a score of 36 points out of 100 in the Corruption Perceptions Index. From 1999 until 2017, the country has averaged 33.2 points reaching its all time high of 43 Points in 1999 and its record low of 27 Points in 2009.
