Over 8000 enterprises actively operating in Mongolia hired a total of 28,000 foreign workers in 2016. However, the parliament has regulated to reduce the number of foreign workforce in Mongolia by up to 50 percent by 2020.
Last year, the number of foreign workers decreased by 30 percent to 19,000. The Mongolian Cabinet is planning to cut the foreign workforce by a further 20 percent. Most foreign nationalists work in the Mongolian mining and construction sectors.
In 2017, the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare checked the papers of foreign nationals at 59 enterprises in cooperation with Ministry of Justice. As a result, a number of violations of Mongolian law were revealed such as transferring foreign workers between enterprises, employing them on different jobs and in different locations as to those stipulated in their contracts. In all such cases, contracts are promptly terminated.
