Mongolia President Kh.Battulga, held a brief meeting with the residents of Zuunkharaa, a town in Selenge province on Thursday. During the discussion, the president wanted to know the opinion of the locals over the disputed gold mining project on ‘holy’ Mt. Noyon.

The name of the mountain indicates its significance: ‘Noyon’ means the ‘prime mountain’. Since the Hunnu Empire dating back over 2,200 years, it has been the site of the tombs of Mongolian nobles and other cultural findings; the people of old believed  that the place protected the souls of their ancestors.  Archeological research shows that artifacts found on the mountain provide invaluable evidence of Mongolia’s ancient history and culture. Today’s Mongolians believe that the Hunnu who dominated the north-east Asia were their direct ancestors.

Geographically speaking, Mt. Noyon It is one of the great watersheds of Mongolia covering 6% of the country’s total territory.

Mt Noyon is a pre-approved site UNESCO World Heritage. According to the organisation’s site requirements, the mountain meets the multiple selection criteria for a site of outstanding universal value from the criteria of history and natural beauty. Mongolia became a member of UNESCO in 1962
