Ulaanbaatar City Mayor G.Munkhbayar wants to introduce beavers into the Tuul river. He says the animals’ dams would improve the quality of the river. It’s not a new idea. “Mongolian scientists introduced beavers elsewhere in 1973, so they have experience,” Mr. Munkhbayar told a meeting of city officials. “We can work together with those scientists.”

“Restoration of the rivers which flow through the city is on the way and the most apparent example is Selbe river,” said Mr. Munkhbayar. “The restoration of the Selbe river has started with the support of youth organizations. The working group has been established and the budget set at MNT 600 million. First the working group will clean the river shore then they will increase the flow of groundwater into the river. That will increase the flow of the river and there will emerge a nice place to enjoy.”
