During the autumn session of parliament, which concluded just before Tsagaan Sar, Mongolia’s lawmakers approved an amendment to the Law on Organ Donors. The law was first approved in 2000 and amended in 2012.

The law legalises organ donation from both brain dead patients and living people. It states that people aged 25 and above will be able to decide if they agree to their organs being donated when they die. The law bans any contacts between relatives of the donor person and the recipient of the organs. Clear measures are taken to prevent the illegal sale of organs – which is a global problem. The law will come into effect in April.

Organ transplant operations have been quickly developing since Mongolian doctors undertook the first kidney transplant surgery in 2006. Since then, doctors in Ulaanbaatar have given new life through 128 kidney transplant, 28 liver and two bone marrow operations.
