In Mongolia, the first celebration of the year is the lunar New Year, Tsagaan Sar, meaning” white moon”. The date of the celebrations is determined by the lunar calendar. Generally, but not always, Tsagaan Sar corresponds with Chinese New Year.
It’s a great family celebration with many ceremonies, which last three days. Mongolians wear traditional dress, eat copious amounts of buuz (steamed meat dumplings) and show their respects to older relatives. Tsagaan Sar traditions are centuries old and are highly respected by Mongolians.
During the Tsagaan Sar holiday (and often during the following week), Mongolians try to visit all their relatives.
