Earlier today, a demonstration organised by the ‘Movement for Developing the Ger Districts’ began on Sukhbaatar square in the capital Ulaanbaatar, but was immediately disbanded when it became clear that the demonstrators did not have permission; they quickly dispersed. The movement has been organising demonstrations in the centre of the Mongolian capital every Wednesday in order to pressure the government to develop the ger districts. The so-called ger districts are home to around half the population of the Mongolian capital and are marked by poor living conditions and underdeveloped infrastructure.
Over thirty people began to congregate on Sukhbaatar square at 11 a.m. without holding any banners. Under the Offence Law, if anyone organises a demonstration without permission, he or she will be fined MNT 150 thousand.
