On Friday, Prime Minister U.Khurelsukh, who is also head of the Mongolian People’s Party, received the descendants of  D.Sukhbaatar on the occasion of his 125th birthday. Damdin Sukhbaatar (1893-1923), known as ‘Father of the Mongolian Revolution was famous for leading a partisan army which liberated the city of Khuree – now Ulaanbaatar. He was also the founding member of the Mongolian People’s Party. D.Sukhbaatar died young – officially of pneumonia, but it is popularly believed he was poisoned by rivals.

As a part of the celebration, an exhibition of D.Sukhbaatar’s belongings, documents went on show at Independence Palace (the head quartners of the MPP) at 10.00. Leaders of the MMP also laid wreaths at the foot of the Statue of D.Sukhbaatar.

The square that bears D.Sukhbaatar’s name features a statue of him astride his horse. The words he apparently spoke when declaring Mongolia’s independence from China in 1921 are engraved on the bottom of the statue: ‘If we, the whole people, unite in our common effort and common will, there will be nothing in the world that we cannot achieve, that we will not have learnt or failed to do.’
