Traders from the ‘Thousand Cars’ Auto Market clashed with the police on Wednesday near Ulaanbaatar railway station. A large number of protesting auto-traders were arrested during the incident which took place ahead of the planned clearing of the site. When it became clear that the traders were unwilling to vacate the site, Ulaanbaatar Railway officials decided to take action in cooperation with the police to physically remove the cars. The Dayar Khas company, which runs the auto market has been renting the land from Ulaanbaatar Railways under a ten-year lease from 2006. The lease expired in 2016, but the traders refused to leave.

The traders protested against the clearing of the site saying that they have invested over MNT 1 billion in the ‘Thousand Cars’ Auto Market. A Ulaanbaatar Railway official explained that they are planning a  establish new station on the site.
