A new meat producing plant with the capacity of butchering 100 head of cattle, 500 head of sheep and goats a day has begun operation in Darkhan-Uul province. The plant has 40 employees and rooms for boning, cooling and deep freezing. There are also storage facilities for the meat.

Mongolia’s livestock herd hit a record 67 million at the end of November 2017. Policy makers have been raising the issue of meat exports over the last few months, seeking an alternative revenue source due to export revenue from raw materials, most of which go to China. The national economy is, therefore, over dependent on global and Chinese prices. Recent years have seen an  economic slowdown, mainly caused by falling prices of mining commodities.

New meat export agreements are currently being forged with a number of countries.
