Earlier today, Ts.Tsogzolmaa, Minister of Education, Culture, Science and Sport announced that B.Batsaikhan, the director of the 29th School for the Deaf will be dismissed from his job on 1 January, 2018.

The issue of Deaf School 29 attracted public attention last spring when the students demonstrated. In the protest they claimed that some of the staff lacked the Mongolian Sign Language (MSL) skills necessary to work with deaf students. Following the protest, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Sports tested the proficiency of the sign language teachers at the 29th School for the Deaf. The results were disturbing: according to the Ministry, 94 percent of the teaching staff met the Elementary MSL requirement, however, for the MSL Proficiency Standard, necessary for teaching, over half the teachers (56 percent) failed to meet the grade.
