In the past, many Mongolians have had to travel abroad for medical treatment. This, however, is changing as the range and quality of services being provided is improving in the country’s hospitals. Those travelling abroad, normally are suffering from one or another of some 39 chronic diseases. According to the Mongolian Health Ministry, during 2017, hospitals have been able to develop their technologies and train their specialists to fully cure nine of these chronic diseases – so patients no longer have to travel. Next year, the Health Ministry is planning that the number of chronic diseases which can be cured in Mongolia, will be extended to 28.
In order to achieve this, Mongolia will send a team of 43 doctors and specialists to South Korea and Japan for fourteen training programmes, each lasting six months. The intense courses will focus on seven more serious illness categories in 2018. In addition to training in these two countries, support is being provided by the Russian Federation, the USA and India.
