As of November 2017, a total of 469 people have been killed in road traffic accidents in our country which has a population of only three million. In total, 189 fatalities were passengers, most of whom were involved in collisions in the capital Ulaanbaatar and other cities; accidents in rural areas are far fewer. An unsurprising fact is that drunk drivers are the cause of most accidents and that over half the victims are pedestrians, cyclists or motorcyclists.

There have been an increased number of public education campaigns about the dangers of drink driving; parent traffic monitors have become a common sight near schools. Towns like Khovd have seen admirable public-led efforts, where volunteers have been painting streets to draw drivers attention to pedestrian crossings.
