Recent years have seen an increase in the frequency of earthquakes and tremors in Umnugobi (South Gobi) southernmost province of Mongolia. The epicentre of the seismic activity is located in the lower part of the Gobi Gurvansaikhan mountain range. This raises some concerns regarding mine safety in South Gobi.

In November, 2016, a total of 52 tremors between the magnitudes of 0.7-3.8 were felt within the space of 24 hours.
