Today (26th of April), B.Batsaikhan, director of the 29th School for the Deaf was fired from his job on the grounds of irresponsibility. He had been worked as a director of the school since 2009. B.Batsaikhan has been replaced by sign language teacher N.Sarantuya as vice-director.
The issue of Deaf School 29 attracted public attention when the students demonstrated. In the protest they claimed that some of the staff lacked the Mongolian Sign Language (MSL) skills necessary to work with deaf students. Following the protest, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Sports tested the proficiency of the sign language teachers at the 29th School for the Deaf. The results were disturbing: according to the Ministry, 94 percent of the teaching staff met the Elementary MSL requirement, however, for the MSL Proficiency Standard, necessary for teaching, over half the teachers (56 percent) failed to meet the grade.
Some media sources are also reporting that teachers at the 29th School for the Deaf sexually molested and raped students. The claims follow a reported interview with one student. The case is being investigated by the Mongolian Police.
