Entitled ‘Multilateral cooperation for fighting domestic violence’, a conference is being held in the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar from 11th to 12th of April. The event is being organised by the Ministry of Justice and Internal Affairs in cooperation with the Swiss Development Agency and the United Nations Population Fund. Nearly 150 delegations are attending; most are social and medical workers and police officers working against domestic violence in the nine district of Ulaanbaatar and the 21 provinces of Mongolia.
The Law to Combat Domestic Violence was approved by the Mongolian Parliament and came into effect on 1st of January. According to officials, a total of 389 cases of domestic violence have been registered; 189 are offences since the law was approved. Furthermore, a total of 525 people have been punished under the new law. Since the law came into effect, cases of domestic violence have decreased by 11%.
