Two weeks ago, some students from the 29^th School for the Deaf organised a demonstration in Ulaanbaatar protesting against a number of their teachers. They claimed that some of the staff lacked the Mongolian Sign Language (MSL) skills necessary to work with deaf students. Following the protest, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Sports tested the proficiency of the sign language teachers at the 29^th School for the Deaf. The results were disturbing: according to the Ministry, 94 percent of the teaching staff met the Elementary MSL requirement, however, for the MSL Proficiency Standard, necessary for teaching, over half the teachers (56 percent) failed to meet the grade.

Some media sources are also reporting that teachers at the 29^th School for the Deaf sexually molested and raped students. The claims follow a reported interview with one student. The case is being investigated by the Mongolian Police.
