Thirty-six species and subspecies of fish are of economic importance in Mongolia. However, fishing is closed to Mongolians and foreigners alike due to the breeding season which lasts from 1^st of April to 15^th of June. The fish population grows twenty-fold during the two months breeding season.

Mongolia caught more than 10 thousand fish for commercial profit in 2016.  World Wildlife Fund Mongolia appeals to people not to fish during the breeding time.
