Today, (26th of January) at the ‘Naiman Sharga’ currency exchange the Mongolian tugrik stood at MNT 2460 against the US dollar. The tugrik has risen by MNT22 against the US dollar from MNT2482 over the last two days.
Since July, the Mongolian tugrik has weakened continuously and was MNT 2720 against the US dollar in November. The tugrik stood at MNT2500 against the USD, after emergency intervention by the Mongolian Bank and Central Bank of Mongolia.
According to Mongol Bank, the tugrik’s rate dropped by 24.4 percent in 2016 due to a sharp decrease in foreign investment and export revenue.
A rescue team from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) arrived in the capital, Ulaanbaatar, on Wednesday. Mongolia hopes to receive an assistance programme from the IMF to see it through its current economic woes.
