The Ulaanbaatar Administration has decided that households
in selected areas that do not change over to using less polluting stoves will
be penalized under the law on air pollution reduction, and will also be evicted.
The Ministry of Nature,
Environment and Tourism, Clean Air Foundation and the city Administration will
distribute new stoves to households in Chingeltei and Sukhbaatar districts in
August, in Bayangol district in September and in Songinokhairkhan and
Bayanzurkh districts in October. The plan is to install 200,000 less smoky
stoves in areas marked as air quality improvement zones. Households will have to
pay only 30% of the market price of the stoves.
Air pollution of Ulaanbaatar is
expected to fall at least by 50% when the new stoves are used.
