Air pollution in the Mongolian capital, Ulaanbaatar, is an annual problem; this year, however, because of the coldest conditions in a decade, it is particularly serious. On 26th of December, parents will march against air pollution in Ulaanbaatar, demanding that officials take urgent and efficient action. The demonstration is being organised by ‘Mothers Against Air Pollution’. According to organisers, twenty thousand parents are expected to participate in the Ulaanbaatar march.

On this occasion, ‘Mothers Against Air Pollution’ have presented a letter containing demands to Mongolian government officials. They are as follows:

  1. The Government must acknowledge the seriousness of the problem and announce that air pollution has reached disaster level and declare a state of emergency.

  2. Implement measures under the declare state of emergency

  3. To  construct new childrens hospitals

  4. To change its method of combating air pollution and implement substantial measures

UNICEF reported 435 deaths from pneumonia among children under the age of five in 2015. The three main causes of death in Mongolia are related to air pollution. The Mongolian Government has approved MNT5 billion for the fight against air pollution in 2017. In the last 15 years, Mongolia spent MNT130 billion to decrease air pollution in Ulaanbaatar.
