The Citizens Representatives
Assembly of Ulaanbaatar gave its approval on July 22 to the blueprint for the construction
of the first phase of the New Yarmag settlement. The project was passed by
Parliament last year. Altogether 223,000 members of 57,000 households would
live in the settlement to come up over 4,400 hectares in Yarmag and Nisekh areas
in Khan-Uul district. The first phase will have houses and apartments for 5,625
families, a diplomats’ enclave, a golf course, and an industrial center for
export items.

The Assembly also adopted new rules
for tourists’ accommodation in Ulaanbaatar. Some of the present 500 hotels and
guest houses, 200 tourist camps, and ger hotels in the city have been found to
be below quality and lacking in standards of service. The Tourism Office has studied
the issue and concluded that 100 places of all varieties would be sufficient to
accommodate tourists. They will all be regulated by the new rules.
