Mongolia's most sacred and revered mountain is to be officially put on the map. On 16th of November, Government of Mongolia restored its name to ‘Burkhan Khaldun’ which was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 4th July 2015 under the title "Great Burkhan Khaldun Mountain and its surrounding sacred landscape." It also called Khentii Khaan and is the highest mountain of the region, rising to an elevation of 2,362 metres.

‘Burkhan Khaldun’ is part of the 12,000 square kilometres (4,600 sq mi) Khentii Khaan Strictly Protected Area in Khentii province, established in 1992.

According to ‘The Secret History of the Mongols’ (c.1240), the oldest surviving Mongolian literary work, Chinggis Khaan was buried on ‘Burkhan Khaldun’.
