An interest in deepening relations between Cuba and Mongolia was expressed by Mongolian President, Ts.Elbegdorj, when he arrived in Cuba on Wednesday night as part of an official visit to the Caribbean nation. President Elbegdorj has met with Cuban President Raul Castro on this the first visit of a sitting president to the country in nearly 50 years. He is visiting the Caribbean country from 15th to 18th of September at the invitation of Raul Castro. In Havana, Ts.Elbegdorj laid a floral wreath at a memorial to the Cuban national hero Jose Marti.
Mongolia and the Republic of Cuba established diplomatic relations in 1960; two years later opened embassies were opened in the respective capitals. Former Mongolian leader Yu.Tsedenbal (1972) and J.Batmunkh (1984) visited Cuba as well as Raul Castro, who visited in Mongolia in 1970, when he was Cuban Defence Minister.
