Floods have hit Ulaangom Soum (district) in Uvs Aimag (province), Mongolia after a day of heavy rainfall. Local officials say that 10 gers have been destroyed and 500 households, 15 apartments, 5 offices, 20 service centers and 12 garages have been inundated with flood water. A total of 35 rescuers with equipment from the Uvs division of the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) have been evacuating families from river banks and diverting flood water from apartments. During the summer in rural areas, Mongolian herders often set up camp in river basins and on mountain slopes where there is an increased danger of flash flooding. As Mongolia lacks an early warning system for floods, it is often caught unprepared for sudden flash floods caused by torrential downpours. Floods have claimed 13 lives in Mongolia since the spring, according to a June statement by NEMA.
