To mark the recent 378th anniversary of the founding of Ulaanbaatar, three statues were unveiled on Seoul Street on 29 October. Themed ‘Happy Ulaanbaatar’, the statues are the creations of the sculptors L.Gantumur and T.Davaasambuu, who explained that they were “modeled for young minds”.
However, the construction cost of the monuments has caused heated discussion among the public. According to G.Uuganbayar, who heads the UB Administration’s City Development Department, a total of MNT 27.4 million (USD 11 thousand) was spent on the three monuments.
There are over 230 monuments, statues and historic sites in the Mongolian capital. According to Ulaanbaatar Mayor S.Batbold, eighty of them were erected with the purpose of beautifying the city.
