The Kharkhorum Museum to showcase
the history of Mongolia from ancient times to the days of the Mongol Empire was
inaugurated on June 4. Kharkhorum in Orkhon valley of Uvurkhangai aimag was the
capital of the Mongol state for long. Its ruins were brought under state
preservation in 1971 and it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004.

The museum came up with Japanese
cooperation and many of the items on display were excavated by teams of German
archeologists. It has three sections: the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, and the
Mongol Empire. Coins dating to 1221 and seals of the empire under Khubilai
Khaan are on display. The Government has spent MNT450 million on installing
security devices, a monitoring system, and building the outside square.

Among those present at the inauguration
ceremony were Minister for Education, Culture and Science Yo.Otgonbayar,
Japanese Ambassador T. Kidokoro, German Ambassador P. Fischer and many figures
from politics and culture.
