Each trip on a large bus now costs MNT100 more, a move leading to
resentment among middle- and low-income citizens who depend on public
transportation. The decision was taken yesterday by the bus owners’ union which
blamed accumulated losses, burden of debt repayment, and the present shortage
and higher price of diesel for forcing them to raise ticket costs.
It said it had placed their case before the Government a long time ago, but had
received no reply. A further wait for the Government decision could well mean
several operators would have to stop their service.
The Public Transportation Office said ticket prices could not be increased unilaterally
by the operators and warned the companies against acting outside the law.
