Mongolia will be implementing a livestock registration project following international practice and standards as part of the national Моngolian Livestock program.  Horses are to be individually identified with the help of implanted electronic chips, while cattle, sheep and goats will have ear tags.  This year’s target is to put these tags into 6.5 million animals, beginning with cattle.

The Моngolian Livestock program aims to register 10-20 percent of animals by 2012, 40 percent by 2015, and 80 percent by 2021.  Standard codes of administrative units will be displayed on the tags and embedded in the chips. The first 6 digits of the 12-digit numbers will record the administrative unit where the owner of the animal is registered, and the next six will note the breed.  Every animal will have its own identification number.  
The program will be launched in every soum by October.
