The Civil Chamber under the President will hold a discussion on the draft law on media freedom on May 2. The freedom is guaranteed in the 1992 Constitution and a law passed in 1998 gives citizens the right to express their opinion, and to speak and write without obstruction. The media now include 140 newspapers, 24 TV channels, 20 radio stations, and many websites, giving citizens the chance to freely express their views.

The draft law has 4 Sections and 19 Articles. It proposes to keep media independent of state and political control, as also of proprietary control. The draft law also gives journalists the right to protect their sources. It seeks to set up a Media Council to arbitrate in complaints against the media and to work for more transparency and sense of responsibility in media.
