The Human Development Center and Globe International have announced that the UN Human Rights Council has decided to discuss the human rights situation in Mongolia in its ninth conference to be held in Geneva, Switzerland on November 23. The conference is expected to be attended by representatives of 47 countries.

The Human Rights Council is an inter-government body made up of 47 States responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the world.  The Council was set up by the UN General Assembly on March 15, 2006 with the main purpose of addressing situations of human rights violations and to make recommendations on them.  The council will evaluate how the Mongolian Government is doing in ensuring and protecting human rights.

This would be the first time Mongolia will make a human rights presentation in the UN. More than 40 NGOs have announced they will gather data and prepare case studies. The Asia Forum, the Human Development Center and Globe International have jointly established a “Forum of Mongolian NGOs to prepare for human rights survey”. Its work will cover the following areas:

The Government’s stance and claims on the human rights situation;

Instances of human rights violations during the incidents on July 1, 2008;

Nature, environment and mining;

Human rights condition among the minority /ethnic groups, sexual minority, disabled citizens;

Human rights condition for transmigration;

Use of voting rights
