MP Kh.Temuujin answers our reporter’s questions on a discussion on April 8 on a draft law on advocacy.

What is the need to amend the present law?
Several of its provisions need to be brought up to date. The ways of the profession have been very slow in changing and its organizational structure is still as it was in the socialist time. Both the President and politicians have urged transfer of power to responsible and qualified civil society organizations from centralized control.

Is it true that several MPs were against the draft at the meeting?
MPs have different interests and opinions. All these have to be heard and considered when a draft law is discussed. Moreover, advocates and other lawyers also have different positions. The working group I head will present a report to Parliament incorporating all that was said at the meeting.

How will the draft help in judicial reform?
Both an advocate and a prosecutor have a responsibility to see that criminal cases are decided in a fair and just manner. The success of the judicial system depends on all who are part of it.
