Goat population decreases for the first time since 2002

The final result of the livestock census reveals that Mongolia has 43 million 657 thousand livestock, a figure that is up by 0.9 percent compared to last years’s.


This number includes 275.1 thousand camels, 2206.7 thousand horses, 2579.6 thousand cattle, 19125.2 thousand sheep and 19470.5 thousand goats. The number of camels increased by 8.6 thousand, of horses by 19.8 thousand, of cattle by 76.2 thousand and of sheep by 762.9 thousand. However, the number of goats decreased by 498.9 thousand. This is the first time since 2002 that the population of goats has shown a fall.


The total number was expected to be more but a dry summer stood in the way. Livestock population rose in 11 provinces and fell in 10 provinces and Ulaanbaatar.


Khuvsgul, with 3922.7 thousand, was the province with most livestock. Arkhangai province has 3619.1 thousand, Uvurkhangai 3587.1 thousand, Tuv 3464.2 thousand, and Zavkhan 2823.5 thousand.


Umnugobi province has the most camels, 85.5 thousand. Arkhangai has the most horses with 251.2 thousand. It also has the most cattle, 385.9 thousand, and most sheep, 1786.1 thousand. As for goats, Bayankhongor province has 1680.7 thousand of them, more than any other province.
