The Professional Inspecting Agency has blamed the recently increasing number of road accidents in Umnugobi aimag on the deterioration of road conditions because of coal transportation. There were 31 accidents in 2010, resulting to 11 fatalities and 15 serious injuries.
Construction of the Tavantolgoi – Gashuunsukhait auto road began last year, but it will take time to be completed. In the meantime, the volume of coal export is increasing and so is the number of heavy trucks used to carry the coal. Altogether 87 mining companies ran 2,665 coal transport vehicles in 2010.
