The head of the Standing Committee on Social Policy, Education, Culture and Science, D.Ochirbat, and Senior Advisor to the Prime Minister, B.Dolgor, recently told journalists that the draft law on Gender Equality has been waiting for 16 years to be passed, and is still held up because of disagreement over certain provisions, like if the holder of an administrative post and its deputy should always be of a different sex. However, some of these are getting resolved, such as reserving 40% of jobs in certain sectors for women. The contentious issue of a quota for women when selecting candidates before an election would be discussed only after the law on election is passed.
The Human Rights National Commission (HRNC) has been asked to implement gender equality provisions, and to submit an annual status report to the Government. The Government, in turn, will report to Parliament once every two years to seek fresh instruction.
The law also bars advertisement for jobs conditional on age, sex, or looks.
