The Mongolian government has not been able to reach a deal with the teachers over their pay rise demands. Yesterday (26 October), the cabinet backed a resolution for a ‘one-off’ MNT 300 thousand (USD 122) bonus for the teachers and doctors instead of increasing their monthly salary. It comes as no surprise that teachers rejected this compromise.
Today (27 October), the Temporary Committee of Teachers announced that 1000 Mongolian teachers will go hunger-strike unless their original demands are met meet.
The Ministry of Finance has responded by saying that it will be necessary to discuss future salary increases with the International Monetary Fund.
