The search-and-rescue operation for the avalanche victims on Mt Otgontenger ended on Wednesday (25 October) after the bodies of the three remaining climbers were finally found. The ten survivors and the bodies of the climbers have been returned by Mi-171 helicopter to Ulaanbaatar. The Mongolian National Institute of Forensic Science is to undertake an autopsy.

A total of seventeen people went missing after an avalanche hit Mt Otgontenger on 21 October. A group of twenty-seven climbers aged between 30 and 50 began climbing on Saturday. However, the avalanche hit when they were 50 meters below the summit. According to a witness, those who survived the avalanche were with a guide who had been delayed for 30 seconds whilst putting his camera away. The survivors were all in the last team of three.

According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), a total of 196 people (108 police and soldiers, 23 medical staff and 55 NEMA officers) with two helicopters and 27 special vehicles have been working at a camp on the mountain, which was established at a height of 2775 meters.
