To be a miner you have to be tough, especially so in Mongolia, with its harsh working conditions; but, now you have also to be slim!
A 33-year-old Mongolian job applicant has recently filed a law suit against one of the country’s main mining companies over weight discrimination. According to Ts.Chinbat, the copper mining giant Oyu Tolgoi LLC (OT) refused to give him a job because of his weight. The company policy is that they do not hire a person who weighs over 100 kg.
Ts.Chinbat, having complained to the Mongolian Human Rights Council over this matter, has filed a law suit against the company. The former applicant is demanding compensation from OT equivalent to a salary since May.
