Over the last ten years, the number of cars on Mongolia’s roads has quadrupled. The latest figures show that the country’s population has risen by 20.7 percent, with a rise of 35 percent in Ulaanbaatar from 2.6 million in 2007. Over the same period, the number of licensed cars in Ulaanbaatar has  quadrupled.

The reasons behind this sharp rise include the following: a swiftly growing population; economic prosperity; an increase in the number of households and a growth of the number of jobs. The September 2017 statistics on car ownership represent an indicator of socio-economic growth; at the same time, however exhaust fumes and traffic jams caused by the vehicles has become a serious big problem in the Mongolian capital helping put Ulaanbaatar near the top of the list of the world’s most polluted cities.
