Mongolian doctors have joined the teachers in demanding a salary increase. The Mongolian Health Workers’ Union has just handed over a petition signed by 20 thousand doctors demanding a salary increase to parliament, the cabinet, the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Health. The doctors are demanding a salary increase of 50 percent in the 2018 state budget.
The monthly salary of Mongolian doctors currently averages MNT 520-560 thousand. The government did not meet its promise of spending over MNT 500 billion on increasing salaries in 2015 and a further MNT 90 billion in 2016. However, MP N.Nomtoibayar said that the government cannot increase salaries until 2019. As a result, doctors are threatening to strike and to hold demonstrations if their demands are not met.
