The Mongolian National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has rescued five Israeli hikers from a remote Mongolian mountain range, a day after they became trapped in adverse weather conditions.
The four men and a woman, all in their 20s, were picked up by a helicopter that reached them after they had activated a satellite distress beacon.
In response to the signal, the Harel Insurance Company arranged for a local rescue team to find the backpackers who were caught in the snowy Tavan-Bogd region of western Mongolia. Due to the poor weather conditions it was decided to send a helicopter.
The Israeli consulate in Beijing coordinated with NEMA and a helicopter set off Wednesday morning on a 1,500 kilometer (930 mile) ten-hour flight that involved two refueling stops.
A doctor who was with the rescue team said they were all in good health. The hikers’ families have been informed of their safety.
