Recently, the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar, has been affected by rampant swarms of the Siberian silk moth and the Lymintria Dispar, better known as the Asian gypsy moth. To counter the insects, the Ulaanbaatar City Administration has begun spraying the green areas of the city with pesticide. Due to the dry weather conditions, the spread of the moth has increased. In the green zones of the capital and at Nairamdal Children’s Camp, located to the west of the city, extermination companies are currently busy. The city has received MNT 19 million from the State Budget for battling the insects.
In rural areas, there are also large numbers of gypsy moths. The situation is particularly bad in the Sharyn Gol, Mandal and Eruu Soums (districts) of Selenge Province and the Batsumer Soum of Tuv Province. There have also been reported outbreaks of gypsy moths in the Khutag-Undur and Teshigt Soums of Bulgan Province, and the Khangal Soum of Orkhon Province
Last year, Mongolia was hit by silk moth outbreaks following forest fires in Siberia.
