A large number of gazelle have died of thirst because of the drought which has hit most parts of Mongolia this year. Therefore, the workers of “Dorniin Ikh Gegee” and “Tomo Building” LLCs have constructed four drinking pools in the steppe. The 120 ton capacity pools have been dug in the Dornod Aimag (province), an area with a large number of gazelle herds.
The Mongolian Ministry of Environment and Tourism has granted permission to the company for constructing six more pools in the Dornod province. In addition, the ministry plans to form a ‘Foundation of Preserving Gazelles’ in cooperation with the company.
Aside from natural disasters, such as droughts, dzud (severe winter) and diseases, illegal hunting is drastically decreasing the population of the gazelle. As a result, the gazelle herds that consisted of as many as 700 members 20 years ago are now migrating with groups of only 30-40 animals.
