All big cities generate large amounts of waste – Ulaanbaatar is no exception. The last decades have seen the population of the city growing extensively; so too, have the mountains of waste. The old landfills are now to be transformed into ecological parks. The Ulaanbaatar City Administration has signed an agreement with the Mongolian National Recycling Association and Sektech LLC to implement an eco-park projects at the sites of the Narangiin Enger and Tsagaan Davaa landfills.
Sealing an old landfill is not an easy matter: steps have to be taken to ensure that leachates do not seep through and poison the water table and that toxic gases, such as methane, do no build up. The project will be implemented in four stages from 2017 to 2032.
