A total of 19 people have fallen ill with symptoms of potentially deadly fish poisoning after eating bottled fish in Mongolia. Three of them are 3-15 year-old children and the others are 34-64 years old. A family of three is being treated in Badarkhundaga Hospital in Orkhon Province, seven in the General Hospital of Bayankhongor province and nine are in the National Centre for Communicable Diseases in Ulaanbaatar, the Mongolian capital. Blood and urine test results from samples taken from the victims of the poisoning are to be released.

The authorities have traced the poisoning incident to a total of 2069 glass jars of fish which have been on sale along roads in Khovsgol, Orkhon, Selenge, Darkan provinces and the city of  Ulaanbaatar. Furthermore, the administration of Khovsgol Province has forbidden the selling of tinned fish with the label ‘Khovsgol Kahtgal’. Experts said the poisoning most likely resulted from poor temperature control.
