Mongolian doctors have successfully performed experimental heart transplant surgery on an animal at the First Central Hospital of Mongolia for first time. The hospital is implementing a program to introduce high technology for organ and cell transplantation; subsequently, this kind of experimental surgery will be carried out in the future.
Doctors have achieved success with three patients, transplanting the required organs simultaneously from a dead donor. In recent years, Mongolian surgeons have performed organ transplant surgery from brain-dead donors six times, saving twelve patients with kidney disease and one with liver disease. The heart transplant programme will allow doctors to save four people from one brain-dead donor.
Doctors are stressing the importance of people understanding how important it is to be organ donors as a result of which the lives of so many others can be saved.
