The Social Health Institute has found that
the volume of nitric dioxide, carbon dioxide, and dust particles in the air in
Ulaanbaatar is respectively 1.5 times, 4.2 times and 7.8 times more than the
accepted level. Power stations and steam boilers annually burn four million
tons of coal, and households burn 400,000 tons more. This and the burning of
wood emit smoke that pollutes the air. The result has been that small children
in Ulaanbaatar are more susceptible to respiratory ailments than those in the
provinces. These include bronchitis and other respiratory problems.
